“I have always felt the need to paint realistic images. In my current paintings, not only is the figurative content important, I find it important to reveal the structure and material. I have developed an abbreviated, reductive style that relies more on intuition.
The figure dominates my work, with the focus on the face and hands. They are aware of the viewer and solidly placed. There is an enhanced psychological narrative in the work and more attention to object choice and placement.
There is a parallel between contemporary society’s need to record simple, day-to-day moments via Facebook and my need to paint them. In my paintings, this day-to-day content is becoming more about the female. I find exploring gender based material interesting and relevant. To form a stronger narrative on this subject, I find it necessary to expand the subject matter from a single person to a social setting.”
